Is the AIGP worth it?
It depends almost entirely on what you already do. The AIGP is a governance credential for people who are accountable for AI systems rather than building them — which makes it an obvious yes for some roles and a poor purchase for others. We run a free study site, so we have an interest in you sitting it; this page is written to be useful anyway.
Worth it if…
You are accountable for AI systems you did not build
Privacy, risk, compliance, legal and audit roles that now own AI questions. The credential maps directly onto what you are already being asked, and gives you vocabulary that holds up in a room with engineers and regulators.
You are moving from privacy into AI governance
The strongest single fit. CIPP or CIPM holders already know the regulatory mode of thinking, and the AIGP is the recognised way to signal the extension without starting a new discipline from scratch.
Your organisation faces the EU AI Act
If someone has to work out whether you are a provider or a deployer, whether a system is Annex III high-risk, and who owes the conformity assessment, the syllabus is the job. The certification is a by-product of learning what you need anyway.
You are consulting or selling into AI governance
A vendor-neutral credential is a credibility shortcut when you have no track record to point at yet, and it is currently the most widely recognised one in this space.
Probably not, if…
You want to become an AI engineer
The AIGP is a governance credential. It does not teach model building, MLOps or data science, and it will not open technical roles. A machine-learning qualification is the right spend.
Your organisation needs certifying, not you
If the goal is demonstrable organisational assurance — something to show customers or a regulator — ISO/IEC 42001 certification is what does that. The AIGP certifies a person and cannot certify a management system.
You are hoping it substitutes for experience
It signals literacy, not seniority. On its own it will not move you from an unrelated role into an AI governance job; combined with adjacent experience in privacy, risk or audit, it will help.
You have no budget and no employer support
The syllabus is free and so is most of the useful practice material. If money is genuinely tight, learn the Body of Knowledge now and sit the exam when someone else is paying — the knowledge is the part that changes your work.
Straight answers
Will it get me a job?
On its own, rarely. It is a filter-passer rather than an offer-winner: it gets a CV past a screen and gives you something structured to talk about in an interview. What converts is being able to reason about a real AI system in front of someone who owns one.
Will it raise my salary?
There is no reliable public salary data specific to the AIGP, and anyone quoting a precise uplift is guessing. The honest version is that it is usually an enabler of a role change rather than a raise within an existing one.
Is it hard?
It is broad rather than deep. The difficulty is not technical: it is that questions present several defensible answers and ask for the best one, which is a skill separate from knowing the material. Most people who struggle know the content and lose marks on judgement.
How long does preparation take?
For someone already working in privacy or risk, several weeks of consistent study is typical. Coming in without a regulatory background, allow longer — Domain II assumes comfort with how legal instruments are structured.
Will it go out of date?
The syllabus is versioned and does move — the current Body of Knowledge is v2.1. AI regulation is unsettled, so expect the material to be revised. Maintenance requires continuing education, which is the mechanism for keeping it current.
The cheapest way to decide
Read the syllabus before you pay for anything. If the four domains describe work you already do or want to do, the credential is worth having and you have started preparing. If they describe work you have no interest in, you have saved the fee — and either way it cost you an hour.
