What the AIGP actually costs
The headline exam fee is rarely the whole number. Certification cost is made of six components, three of which are optional and one of which recurs every year — and the largest available saving usually has nothing to do with study materials.
Why there are no prices on this page
The IAPP does not publish certification pricing outside its own store, figures differ by region and membership status, and they change. Quoting a number here would go stale and mislead you on the one page where accuracy about cost is the entire point. Check current pricing at iapp.org before you budget. What follows is the structure of the spend, which does not change.
The six components
Exam fee Required
The single unavoidable cost. Paid to the IAPP per attempt, and priced differently for members and non-members — which is why the membership decision below is really a bundling decision rather than a separate purchase.
IAPP membership Effectively required
Certification is issued and maintained through IAPP membership, and the member exam price is lower than the non-member price. Compare the bundled total against the standalone total rather than treating membership as an add-on.
Retake fee Only if you fail
A further fee per attempt, usually lower than the first sitting. The cheapest way to control this line is not to sit until your mock scores are consistently clear of the pass mark.
Official training Optional
IAPP-delivered or partner-delivered courses, typically the largest single line if you take one. Often paid by an employer. It is not a prerequisite for sitting the exam, and the Body of Knowledge is the authoritative syllabus either way.
Textbook and study materials Optional
The official textbook is sold separately. The Body of Knowledge, the exam blueprint and the IAPP study guide are free downloads, and are what the exam is actually written against.
Ongoing maintenance Required to stay certified
Continuing professional education credits plus an annual maintenance fee, paid alongside membership. This is the cost people most often overlook when budgeting, because it recurs.
Where the money is actually saved
Check whether your employer already has IAPP membership
Many organisations hold corporate or group membership, which changes your exam price and sometimes covers it outright. This is the largest single saving available and the most frequently missed.
Treat training as optional until you have measured yourself
Work the free Body of Knowledge and a question bank first, then take a timed mock. If you are scoring comfortably, paid training is buying confidence rather than knowledge. If you are not, you will at least know which domains to buy help for.
Budget the retake risk instead of the retake
A failed sitting costs the retake fee plus the delay. Sitting only once you are consistently clear of the pass mark is cheaper than any study material.
Ask about academic, government and group rates
The IAPP operates reduced pricing in several categories and runs group sittings. Neither is advertised prominently, so ask before paying list price.

Before you pay anything
The most expensive mistake is sitting too early. Work out whether the credential fits your role first, then measure yourself against the blueprint before booking:
